Lake Michigan fishing overview
Fishing on Lake Michigan includes Chinook salmon, rainbow trout, brown trout, lake trout, and coho salmon. The species you target and the area you fish can vary with the season and local conditions.
In general, anglers start shallow in early spring and move deeper as the season progresses and the water warms.
Lake Michigan trolling: temperature, thermocline, and currents
Lake Michigan develops distinct temperature layers during summer: warmer surface water, colder deep water, and the thermocline between them. On the temperature profile, the thermocline is the section where temperature drops most quickly over a relatively short depth interval.
Salmon, trout, and baitfish respond to this structure, but they do not all occupy the same layer. Lake trout often use colder water below the thermocline, while salmon and steelhead may feed around or above it. Sustained wind can raise or deepen the temperature break and move suitable water away from yesterday’s successful depth.
| Species | Temperature |
|---|---|
| Chinook salmon | 52–58°F / 11–14°C |
| Coho salmon | 52–58°F / 11–14°C |
| Steelhead | 55–65°F / 13–18°C |
| Brown trout | 54–63°F / 12–17°C |
| Lake trout | 42–52°F / 6–11°C |
These ranges give you somewhere to begin. Find suitable temperatures, then use bait concentrations, sonar marks, and repeated bites to choose where to concentrate your presentations.
Check currents at lure depth. The water beneath your boat may move differently from the surface, changing lure speed and action as you turn. Compare both trolling directions and adjust based on how your spread performs.
Common lures and trolling methods
Downriggers and Dipsy divers help place your lures at the depths you want to fish. Downriggers provide controlled depth placement, while divers carry presentations down and away from the boat.
Common presentations include spoons, flasher-and-fly combinations, and meat rigs. Use temperature and bait depth to choose where to start, then adjust lure choice, trolling direction, and speed according to lure action and bites.
